Beyond the Wall of Sleep

Digital Versatile Discs

Realized that I haven’t updated my DVD Collection for quite some time so I did that now.

To manage and display the DVDs I installed a small gallery tool for WordPress called NextGEN Gallery. It’s for from being as full featured as other galleries out there but it’s darn easy to use, integrates into WordPress nicely and does exactly what I need - after changing a couple of lines of code that is. I’m probably going to use the gallery for some photos later on, similar to Bal’s photo gallery just that I’m missing cool photos right now.

Last but not least I added the subdomain dvd.gomjabbar.de which simply gives you a list of all the DVDs I own in plain text. I hope this will be useful when standing in front of a couple of DVDs and not knowing whether or not I already own the ones I intend to buy. Next time it’s just a matter of grabbing the mobile phone, pointing it to dvd.gomjabbar.de, browsing the list and eventually buying loads of movie goodness.

Movies

March 27, 2007 - Movies

Watched a lot of movies lately. Not only did my Amazon delivery I talked about in my last update arrive, I also bought two more DVDs (The Usual Suspects and Mulholland Drive) and went to cinema. Here’s some short lines about the stuff I’ve recently seen:

Pan’s Labyrinth
Brilliant movie, I really love it. Reminded me on Alice in Wonderland and just like that one Pan’s Labyrinth is not for kids!

The Good Shepherd
Slow, too long, boring. Angelina Jolie was hot, though.

Crank
After watching The Transporter II, which was pretty boring, I wasn’t so sure about another movie with Jason Statham as leading actor… How wrong I was! Crank really is a fast and fun movie, go watch it!

Lucky # Slevin
Another damn good one. Makes you think “WTF is going on” in times but in the end everything makes sense. Even if it wouldn’t make sense, it’s a movie with The Bruce, damnit!

A Bittersweet Live
Clearly one of the best asian movies I’ve ever seen with a deep and emotional story. Definatly a movie you have to see, even if you’re not into asian movies.

Ong Bak
Martial arts movie from Thailand. Pretty astonishing body control and fighting scenes but this is just not my kind of movie genre.

Sympathy for Mr Vengeance
Not bad but not too good either. Oldboy was much better in my humble opinion. Definatly nothing for anyone who still wants to get into asian movies, it’s veeeery Korean, very.

Infernal Affairs
Watched it for the 3rd time now if I counted correctly - and for the first time after watching The Departed. It really is a good movie, no wonder Scorsese made a good remake of it, it was almost impossible to screw up.

DVD Collection

February 26, 2007 - Movies

I went to a store today with the intention of buying some movies. When standing in front of the shelf and looking at some of the DVDs I thought to myself: Damn, do you already own this one or was it one from your wishlist?

Back home I started to make a list of all the DVDs I own to not buy any movies twice in the future. If you’re interested you can find my collection here. I have to admit, Vondur’s music collection is a bit more impressive but 48 DVDs is not that bad in my humble opinion.

After I finally knew which movies I have, I went to Amazon right away and ordered some I’m still missing: Infernal Affairs, Sympathy For Mr Vengeance, A Bittersweet Life and Ong Bak.

Old Men in New Cars

Movie - Old Men in New Cars

Been watching Old Men in New Cars yesterday, which I haven’t seen before for whatever reason, and really liked it. It’s as good as its predecessor In China They Eat Dogs and a lot better than The Good Cop, which is also by the same director, Lasse Spang Olsen.

The movie features almost all of the characters already know from In China They Eat Dogs so if you know the movie you’ll feel right at home, if not the black humor and wicked story will make you do in a matter of minutes.

The story is about the last wish of a dying man who asks Harald, the main character and foster child of Monk (the dying man), to find his real son, Ludvig, who is currently in a swedish prison. After freeing Ludvig and after he met his father for the first time the characters set out to raise some money to finance a new liver for Monk which is the only chance for him to survive.

Old Men in New Cars is definatly recommended, same goes for In China They Eat Dogs. I think I will soon expand my DVD collection with Inkasso, the latest movie of Lasse Spang Olsen, and with some of his older works.

Casino Royale

December 11, 2006 - Movies

Unlike Paul I don’t think the new Bond was bloody brilliant, in fact is was partially bloody boring.

The first half (maybe a bit more) of the movie is really nice, with interesting action sequences and a good, albeit simple, plot. Daniel Craig is surely the best Bond actor I’ve seen and I definatly won’t forget quotes as the following one:

James Bond: Vodka-Martini.
Bartender: Shaken or stirred?
James Bond: Does it look like I give a damn?

The rest of the movie on the other hand belongs to the most boring and superfluous things in motion picture history. It was so corny and predictable that I felt the urge to leave the room to get new beer, I did not, so I even learned who the real villain was in the last minute of the movie. And let me tell you: It wasn’t worth the wait.

One thing left I really liked about the movie: The lack of unrealistic features and gadgets, like invisible cars and other stuff that was seen in previous Bond movies, was really nice. Everything felt more real and that’s a good thing.

The bottomline is: Watch the movie as soon as it’s out on DVD, don’t go see it in cinema. It’s probably better to spend your money on other movies, Deja Vu or Apocalypto might be interesting, haven’t seen those two yet, though.

New DVDs

March 8, 2006 - Movies

Just bought some new DVDs from a local store for a pretty good price: 4 DVDs for 20 €, not that bad if you ask me. I’ve seen all of the movies already what makes me sure that there are no crap movie amongst them. If you haven’t seen one of them make sure to do so, all of them are recommended.

Anyway, here’s what is now added to my collection.
